Mask Fit Testing
All students are required to complete respiratory mask fit testing prior to commencing placement in a hospital or any Queensland Health facility.
Mask fit testing is conducted by qualified Registered Nurses at the QUT Medical Centre, located at the Kelvin Grove campus in U Block, Level 2.
Appointments must be scheduled through the designated online booking system, PickTime. Bookings are essential and cannot be made by phone; all appointments must be arranged via the online booking site.
The Mask Fit Testing Clinic operates on Mondays and Tuesdays, excluding public holidays. Additional clinic days may be made available in response to student demand.
Students must have a placement allocation with a ‘Confirmed’ status in InPlace before booking an appointment. Students who are unsure of their placement status are advised to contact their clinical coordinator for clarification prior to scheduling their appointment.
Each mask fit testing appointment incurs a fee of $90, which must be paid before testing can proceed.
Mask fit testing is an annual requirement, and students are required to be fitted for two different mask types during their appointment.
On the day of testing, students must present their valid student identification card. Following the appointment, a certificate of completion will be issued via the student’s QUT email address. A copy of this certificate will be uploaded to InPlace by the Nurse, and students are encouraged to retain a personal copy for their records.

Before Your Appointment
YOUR APPOINTMENT
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for payment. Mask fit testing appointments are limited to 20 minutes, and arriving late may delay your testing or affect other appointments scheduled for the day. If you arrive late, the nurse may be unable to see you, and you will need to reschedule for another day.
As there is currently a high demand and a long waitlist for appointments, we kindly ask that you cancel your booking if you are unable to attend. You can do this via the original confirmation email or by calling Reception on 3138 3161. Providing sufficient notice allows us to offer the appointment to another student on the waitlist.
COLD AND FLU
If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, it may impact the outcome of your test. We kindly request that you reschedule your appointment for a time when you are feeling better. If rescheduling is not possible, please inform the nurse upon arrival, as you may be asked to return on another day.
SMOKING
Students are advised to avoid smoking for a minimum of 30 minutes before their scheduled appointment. The fit testing process involves the use of highly sensitive particle detection equipment, and the presence of smoke particles in the air may adversely affect the test results, potentially leading to an unsuccessful mask fit.
LONG HAIR
Please ensure that long hair is securely tied back in a ponytail prior to your appointment. The mask fitting procedure requires participants to demonstrate the correct application and seal of an N95 respirator, and loose hair may interfere with achieving a proper fit, potentially compromising the accuracy of the test.
FACIAL HAIR
If you are unable to be clean-shaven for the mask fit test for religious reasons, please contact your unit coordinator as soon as possible to discuss your options.
Students with facial hair are strongly encouraged to review the 3M website The importance of being clean shaven while using tight-fitting respirators prior to their appointment, in order to ensure a successful fit test. Please note that if the fit test is unsuccessful, you may be required to return on another day, and an additional fee may apply.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q) Why is there a payment now when it used to be free?
A) As the Faculty of Health is no longer running the clinic, the QUT Medical Centre has taken over its operation. As a result, a fee has been introduced to support the ongoing operation of the clinic.
Q) Can I submit the receipt to Medicare or Private Health Insurance/OSHC?
A) No, this fee is a private charge and is not eligible for a rebate through Medicare or Private Health Insurance. It is a test required by most Queensland Health facilities and certain private institutions, and as such, it is classified as a professional charge.
Q) Can I pay with cash?
A) QUT Medical Centre is a cash-free establishment. We accept payments via Mastercard, Visa, and debit cards. Please note that we do not accept American Express.
Q) Can I book for another day other than Monday or Tuesday?
A) Currently, all available appointments are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Additional days may be made available based on demand. If these days do not suit your schedule, please email maskfittest@qut.edu.au, and the Mask Fit Test Team will provide alternative arrangements.
Q) I am not able to find an appointment before my placement, what do I do?
A) Due to high demand for mask fit appointments, we currently have a long waitlist. Our team is actively working to increase availability; however, we may not be able to accommodate your requested time frame.
Below is a list of third-party mask fitting companies that may be available.
Please note: Before booking an appointment with a third-party provider, contact the Mask Fit Test Team via email maskfittest@qut.edu.au to confirm the appropriate mask brand. Different facilities have specific mask requirements, and being fitted for the incorrect mask could result in delays or cancellation of your placement. Please ensure you provide the location and/or ward of your placement.

Q) I am a radiology/podiatry/optometry/psychology/ect student, do I need to do a mask fit test?
A) If you are unsure whether you require a mask fit test, please contact your faculty or unit coordinator to confirm. We recommend waiting until you have a confirmed placement through InPlace before booking an appointment.
Q) I am a Paramedic student; can I book without placement allocation? Can I book early?
Yes, Paramedic students are exempted from the requirement of placement allocation prior to mask-fit test. You are welcome to book anytime during the year; however, you are generally asked to get mask-fit done at least 3-months before the expected Placement commencement date to maximize the mask-fit test 12-month validity.
PARAMEDIC STUDENTS ONLY: After completing your Mask Fit, if you know your QAS station, please promptly complete the "Mask Fit: QAS Station Notification" form. This is a requirement from QAS and must be submitted prior to commencing your Clinical Placement. If you are unsure of your station details or require assistance, please contact the WILS team for further guidance.
Q) I don’t have a placement confirmed, can I get tested early / in advance?
A) We strongly recommend waiting until your placement has been confirmed before booking an appointment. However, if you wish to complete the mask fit test before your placement is confirmed, please email maskfittest@qut.edu.au for further guidance before booking an appointment.
Q) I have received my Placement Allocation but not received an email/invitation to book in for Mask Fit Testing?
You may be outside the catchment period, as invitations are typically sent within 4–6 weeks before your placement start date. However, if you believe your commencement date falls within this timeframe and you have not yet received an email, please contact us via maskfittest@qut.edu.au and we will be happy to check this for you.
Q) I have been tested at my workplace recently (within 12 months), is this accepted and what evidence do I need to provide?
Please kindly upload the evidence to InPlace as soon as possible.
The evidence should include the following:
a) Student Name
b) Brand and Name of Mask
c) Date of testing AND Expiration date
d) Pass result (e.g FF >100) or similar
Q) I have had a mask fit test last year; do I need to do another one this year?
A) Yes, mask fit testing is required annually. If you had a mask fit test in November or December 2024, please email maskfittest@qut.edu.au before booking an appointment, as your previous test results may still be valid.
Q) When will I get my certificate?
A) Upon successful completion of the fit test, a copy of your certificate will be sent to your student email on the same day. The mask fit facilitator will also upload a copy to InPlace on your behalf.
Q) I am not a QUT student; can I book an appointment?
No, this service is exclusively available to QUT students and staff. Non-QUT students can refer to the above table for alternative mask fitting options.
